Honouring India’s grand and gorgeous architectural masterworks that have enchanted the West for centuries, we have carefully designed this tour of Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan.
The heart of this itinerary is to visit the grandest of the subcontinent’s monuments, with an emphasis on lodgings fit for – and often built for – royalty, which are some of the places we are happy to say you stay.
Accommodation ranges from the distinguished Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, home to the last reigning Maharajah; Agra’s showcase Amarvilas, where every window looks out at the nearby Taj Mahal; the majestic Udaivillas in Udaipur; and perhaps the grandest palace hotel on the planet: Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur.
Your journey begins with a couple of days to explore the capital city’s mystical mayhem. Delhi is littered with relics of lost empires and you will become acquainted with its ethnic mosaics and charm. After the long flight from London, the Leela Palace is the perfect place in which to relax and acclimatise.
A morning drive will take you to Agra – home of the Taj Mahal. Each suite at Oberoi Amarvilas is especially designed to overlook the Taj so for the next two nights it becomes your personal view. Agra is also home to the UNESCO World Hertiage Site of Agra Fort, where you will spend an afternoon becoming acquainted with its fascinating history.
Next is the pink city of Jaipur. You will stay in The Rambagh Palace, a regular on the list for the World’s Best Hotels. You have three days to visit the famous City Palace, wander the mirrored-mini palaces of the Amber Fort and spend an afternoon bathing and riding elephants. It’s the perfect place to explore on foot or in the air with even a chance to take an early morning hot air balloon ride over the city.
A short flight will take you onto Udaipur, a place that has actually been labelled as ‘the most romantic spot on the continent of India’. Your hotel, Oberoi Udaivilas is situated on the banks of the Pichola Lake. You just need to wander the streets here to soak up the vibrant atmosphere, obviously a visit to the City Palace is a must as well as Eklingji, the thousand-year old temple just north of the city.
You drive northwest towards Jodhpur, where your home for the next three nights is Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the largest of India’s great palaces. It is the residence of the Erstwhile Royal Family, with views overlooking the Blue City of Jodhpur. Known as a destination itself, you can also enjoy the sights of the immense Mehrangarh Fort and a visit to the Bishnoi Villages.
Finally you will fly back to Delhi where you have a day room at the Oberoi Gurgaon before your international flight that same evening. If you have time, your Safari Director can take you shopping for some last minute souvenirs or gifts for your friends and family back home.
There are some parts of the world that once visited, get into your heart and won’t go. For me, India is such a place.
